A Short Story: Emma

Vet Participant

“I hate peas.

I hate them!

I hate them!

I hate them!

You ALLLLWAYS make me eat peas”

Emma’s crestfallen mother stood by patiently while Emma went on and on expressing her strong disdain for the fare she had lovingly prepared for their dinner.

“They are good for you Emma,” she plaintively plead,  “now please, just eat your veggies.  Dinner has been done for over for an hour now and I want to go clean up!”

“MOOOOOM!”

The furious screech startled Emma’s mother.

Her voice dripping with impatience,  she called up the stairs, “What is it now, Emma?’

“Baby Bennie is in my room and he is messing with my stuff!”

Her exasperated mom sighed loudly,  “He is only a baby Emma.

For crying out loud!

He cannot hurt your stuff!

Please be kind to your brother.”

“But my show is not over yet!

I want to finish my show!

You never let me finish my show”

Putting her foot down, Emma’s mother resolutely stood her ground,

“Emma I told you to turn that TV off and go to bed over 20 minutes ago.

Turn it off and GO TO BED NOW!”

“Homework is stupid.

We do enough work at school that we should not need to do it at home too.

All my friends are outside riding their bikes.

Their moms are not making them do homework.”

Emma’s accused Mom deftly pointed out, “This is not homework, it is an unfinished assignment from class today.

Mrs. Rathbone said that you spent the time that you should have been working on the assignment,

complaining about it.

Now you have to finish it up at home.”

“Mrs. Rathbone is unfair.  She hates me.”

With a sad shake of her head, Emma’s dispirited Mom said, “Emma please, must you whinge about everything?

This is going to be all of our undoing!

NOW STOP grumbling and get it done.”

Emma thought to herself,

ok I will do it

but they are not going to like it!

  1. Ohhh. I was totally going to vote for this and I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t on the list. I totally didn’t register that it was your own story. Great job! But now I have to go back and pick another story to vote for, haha.

  2. Oh! The written screenshot piece is PRECIOUS. Such a nice touch. Fell in love with mom’s tough love here, that little Emma is feisty. Wonder who she gets it from?? 🙂 -J2J

  3. Hahahaha! Lovely that she got her wish to be not only 100 but in the Bahamas! The assignment design is PERFECT – how did you do that!?

So the only real question here though is…did she whinge about passing the rum to Depp too? 😀 Once a whinger….

  4. Oh, goodness. This take was so unique and hilarious. Kids say and write the darndest things… especially when they are in the hormonal preteens it seems. Loved Emma and her mother. Just…everything about this.
