A Christmas Story

AN: Last short story of the year and it is a SHORT SHORTIE …

because it has been a LONG LONG month.

Wishing all of you a bright and beautiful 2021!

“OK girls it is time for bed!

If you do not go to sleep, Father Christmas will not come!”

Dallas had been unsuccessfully trying to get the girls to bed for the last forty minutes.

“Papa please tell us the story of St Nick,” Tiffy pleaded,

“Annie has never heard it.

This is her first Christmas!

PLEASE!”

Dallas looking at their sweet faces, reluctantly agreed to this final stall.

“OK! But this is it!

Then off to bed for you two!

I do not want to have to explain to Father Christmas why you are still awake!”

With the girls tucked in and both asleep, Dallas took a quiet moment to enjoy the glow of Christmas eve.

Thoughts and memories of the past year flood over him as he warmed himself by the fire.

“This was always your favorite time.

I miss having Hot Cocoa with you and snuggling by the fire place.

I can’t believe it has been almost a year since you left us, he said aloud.

“It has been a long hard year.

When you first left I didn’t think I would survive.

I never experienced such grief and anger.

I was just so sad and just so mad.

I knew I had get myself together for the girl’s sake.

They needed me to be there for them more than ever.

I think I’ve done a good job with that this year.

It’s been hard but the girls are sweet and never difficult for me.

I think they feel like they need to be there for me too.

We’ve had a lot of fun, we three.

I tried to build them playhouse.

You know I am not that handy so it’s not a very good playhouse but they love it anyway!

So this year we had mandatory homeschool.

I was so anxious about it, but Tiffany has done so well. It was not difficult at all.

You would be so proud of them, they both are so bright.

The year went by so very fast.”

Dallas sighed as he paused in his recollections, “I hope where ever you are,

that you know how much we miss you and that we are doing OK.”

Father Christmas looked over at Cass and spoke kindly, “You see they will be just fine. You can be at peace now.”

Cass slowly nodded her understanding.

“OH thank you so much for doing this for me Father Christmas,” Cass sighed.

“Can I have just one more moment with him?”

Father Christmas nodded his agreement.

  1. Those last two screenshots… tears. I loved the progression from one winter to the next. Also, it was a sweet touch to have Father Christmas be the one who was Cass’s angel/guide. It tied in nicely to the beginning when Tiff asks to hear the story of St. Nick. Wonderful story!
