To the local villagers, Enoch was considered a fool.
They called him the easy way fool.
If there was an easy way to do something, Enoch would certainly find it or at least spend a fair amount of time looking for it.

He was the local blacksmith and he lived in a delightful little house just outside of the village proper.
He loved his little house but it was a lot of work to keep it tidy and in good repair.
Enoch longed for someone to help him.
One day, when he was out for walk in the sunshine,
he happened upon a bear.
A BIG bear!
At first Enoch was a bit shaken up by the meeting.
But soon he found that BIG bear was quite a congenial fella.
Not terrifically smart but oh so very kind.
Enoch thought to himself, OH my this is a big fella!
I bet he can do a lot of chores and not get tired.
Then Enoch got a terrific idea.
“I live in that house over there,” he said pointing to his home.
“OH,” said Big Bear, “that is a beautiful house!
I have always dreamed of living in such a fine house!”

Enoch smiled widely.
He could not believe his good fortune!
“Well it just so happens that I am looking for a roommate,” he told Big Bear.
Big Bear was overjoyed to hear this news.
Enoch said cautiously, “of course you will have to do chores around the house.”
“I love doing chores,” Big Bear cried gleefully!
Enoch was so happy!
Just the thought of all the lovely naps he would be able to take made him giddy.!

So it was decided Bear would come live with him.
In exchange for doing chores of course.
It did not take but a couple of days for Enoch to learn
that while Big Bear did indeed love doing chores,
he was not very good at them.
His tidy little house was decidedly untidy and in need of repairs!
“This will not do,” he shouted at Big Bear.
“My little house is a shambles!”

Big Bear was very sad that he had disappointed Enouch.
He loved living in the cute little house.
He pleaded with Enoch, “Please don’t send me away.
I will try to do better!
Just give me one more chance.”
Enoch relented.
It was nap time and he was sleepy.
“OK,” he said to Big Bear.
“You just stay out of trouble.
Why don’t you shoo the flies away while I take a nap?”
Big Bear was delighted to have a way to please Enoch.

Big Bear ran to and fro …
this way ..
and that way …
shooing the flies away.
Soon he sighed contentedly.
All the flies had been vanquished.
Suddenly, to his great horror, he spied something terrible.
One fat fly had escaped his shooing and had landed right on the end of Enoch’s nose.

OH the rude little fella.
Big Bear was incensed.
Reaching down he plucked up a big heavy rock.
He would take care of this one …
once and for all!

And the moral of the story is …
Well DUH …
Never invite a BIG bear to live in your house!

That was super funny Lisa, when I first seen Big Bear with that in his hand I was thinking a huge dusting brush, boy was I wrong, but in a way Enoch got what he deserved, well maybe a bit harder but never the less, it don’t pay being mean to a big bear. I really enjoyed this story dear!

Oh my! Poor lazy foolish Enoch. I shouldn’t have laughed at his misfortune but I did.

Lol me too And I left it open ended so people can kind of finish it themselves. This is a classic old table that is repeated in many different cultures. I was surprised to find that out when I did a little research about fables and fools. There are many hilarious versions of this very scenario and involving all sorts of characters. But the end is always the same LOL

It is actually a classic fairytale or folktale story that I sort of adapted for the Sims. Usually it’s a person but the bear was so cute. I found this same fable of the fly and I don’t know how many different cultures everything from Russian to Arabic

Now that was a laugh all the way through. The pictures alone were making me giggle. Well done. Loved it.

Thank you so much! I’ve been so busy out in the garden that I haven’t had a chance to look at anybody’s stories yet so I’m going to take the time today and just enjoy myself kicking back and reading

Oh thank you so much! I kind of regret not taking the extra time to make it appear as though his hand was bent back a little bit. I was being lazy and in a rush

Oh, wow, I have to say that this really spoke to my personal situation. I posted an ad for a roommate on Craigslist, this polar bear responded, they sounded normal on the Zoom call, and up until now I’ve been thinking, should I? But this cautionary tale has convinced me not to.
At first I questioned the villagers’ wisdom for calling him the “easy way fool”—isn’t that outside-the-box thinking where wisdom comes from, even if it sometimes fails? That’s where I thought this was headed. Boy, was I wrong. Maybe it’s because Enoch’s version of outside-the-box thinking is seeing a bear, a BEAR, and thinking “I bet he can do a lot of chores and not get tired.” There’s a thing as being too off-base!

A long time ago I had a wise old pastor tell me – “Lisa, there are two sides to every horse … and you can fall off both.” I just love that and it has stayed with me.

Poor Big Bear! He was trying his best. 😂😂 I’d say at least he gets to live in the cottage, but from the looks of things he’ll burn it down by tomorrow! That’s really interesting that it’s a world-wide fable. I thought it felt very familiar. I’ve seen similar pairings in old cartoons and comedies (especially the part where they try to kill a fly/bee on someone’s nose/face with excessive force) so they must have gotten it from the fables.

Some of the best are from Russia. One that is nearest and dearest to my heart was of a little old lady and a judge … I am sure you can “do the math” on that one – the judge gets whacked but he had given the old lady permission. I was rolling!
